Imagine…

Monday, May 10th, 2010

In the final days leading up to the Celebration Event we’re kicking off an online conversation that will also be carried through among the audience at Overture on Sunday, May 16th. Starting today, we invite and encourage you to participate in a global discussion of how, together, we can create a healthier world.

What do you imagine we can achieve? What steps can we take to improve our lives and increase happiness throughout the world? How might people be better able to connect and grow?

Please take a moment to post your own statement, beginning with “Imagine…” We look forward to seeing where this conversation can take us.

Public Tickets Distributed: Capturing the Excitement

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Public tickets were distributed this past month for the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds’ public dialogue featuring His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and CIHM Director Richard Davidson. At noon on Saturday, April 17th, hundreds of eager fans got a chance to receive a pair of tickets to the event. And, in just over an hour, the limited number of available tickets were gone.

Lines began forming in the wee morning hours, as college students, community members and everyone in between braved the brisk wind for a favorable spot in line.

As the morning grew warmer, lines extended around and through the two campus box offices. At Vilas Hall, the line snaked around corners of the building, visible from University Avenue. Lawn chairs provided an easier seat at Memorial Union, as the crowd measured hundreds of feet, and concluded at the building’s opposite entrance.

Corrine was the first person in line at Vilas Hall, having staked out her spot the previous evening. When she realized she was first, she decided to come back early at 5:30 a.m. and re-claim her spot.Lori Fleury prepared for the long wait and cold winds by pitching a tent outside of Vilas Hall. After sleeping in her car all night, she moved to the tent, and was second to receive tickets at that location. Joan Regnery was also thrilled that she had gotten tickets. She began her wait in line at 9:30 a.m., and said her interest in Buddhism attracted her to the event.

The temporal and spiritual leader will speak with Davidson on the topic, ‘Investigating Healthy Minds’. For those who can’t attend, a free, live public webcast will be shown via the Center’s website at www.investigatinghealthyminds.org.

Google Tech Talks

Presented by Richard J. Davidson on September 23, 2009

“In this talk, Richard J. Davidson will explore recent scientific research on the neuroscience of positive human qualities and how they can be cultivated through contemplative practice. Distinctions among different forms of contemplative practices will be introduced and they will be shown to have different neural and behavioral consequences, as well as important consequences for physical health in both long-term and novice practitioners. New research also shows that meditation-based interventions delivered online can produce behavioral and neural changes. Collectively, this body of research indicates that we can cultivate adaptive neural changes and strengthen positive human qualities through systematic mental practice.”
