Mind and Life XXIII, Ecology, Ethics and Interdepence - October 17, Dharamsala, India

The goal of the meeting was to provide an opportunity to articulate an engaged environmental ethics. This would include the understanding of interdependence through an examination of the most recent data on the scientific case for effective ecological action.

Parents, educators, day care providers, students and interested community members came to learn and ask questions about the relationship between neuroscience research and learning in the classroom. CIHM staff also presented research studying the effects of mindfulness in preschool and elementary classrooms. Lubar Institute Symposium - Neuroscience and the Abrahamic Religions: April 28, Madison, WI

Building on Richard Davidson's pioneering research into the neurophysiology of Buddhist meditation, the symposium brought together neuroscientists and scholars of religion to discuss how such research might be extended to include contemplative practice within Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The public was invited to attend an interactive panel discussion, 'This is Your Brain on Religion,' to be held after the day-long symposium.

17th Annual Wisconsin Symposium on Emotion: April 13-14, Madison, WI

This year’s theme, neurogenetic plasticity, emotion, and psychopathology featured a world class lineup of researchers who presented their latest work on the neurogenetic plasticity of the brain as it relates to emotion and psychopathology.

CIHM's own, Emma Seppala, PhD, among notable others, presented at the Happiness Within Reach Conference. This conference explored the new science of happiness, the evidence-based qualities, experiences, and beliefs that awaken greater joy and stimulate vibrant health.

Brain: The Inside Story Programs - Tibetan Meditation, Brain, and the Arts: January 27, New York, NY (American Museum of Natural History)

Part of the six-day Living in America: Brain and the Tibetan Creative Mind program, this panel discussion on the training of Tibetan monks, recent brain research on long-term meditators in the Tibetan tradition, and the practice of meditation in the West included Abbot Khen Rinpoche Geshe Kachen Lobzang Tsetan, neuroscientist Richard J. Davidson, and psychiatrist and Tibetologist Joseph Loizzo, director of the Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science.
