CIHM facility
The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center is grounded in the belief that our space should embody the contemplative qualities we wish to cultivate. In addition to promoting our research through proven, high-impact scientific channels, the Center also subsidizes outreach programs and educational seminars that translate its research into mainstream language, making it useful for children, caregivers, educators, and health care professionals and the public at large.
The transformation of space
The CIHM has remodeled a 3600 square foot facility within the Waisman Center. The Center will serve as the world’s first translational research facility equipped with a brain imaging lab and meditation space under one roof.
Within the facility is individual space for graduate students, researchers and staff, and meeting and gathering areas, but it's centerpiece is the intimate, thoughtfully designed meditation space. Often referred to as the Center’s sacred space, this meditation room provides a space where contemplative practices and research can be carried out.

Green Flooring Systems
We have installed Johnsoniteʼs Mesto Rubber Floor Tiles at the entrance of our Center. This product is made of 100% synthetic rubber, can last up to 30 years, is certified to have low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and is considered a green flooring option.
The carpet tiles throughout the Center were manufactured by Masland Carpet Mills. The Invista Antron Fiber is proven to last up to 75% longer than other fibers on the market. The carpet tiles can be picked up and reused, rotated for wear or replaced individually if damage is done to a tile. The carpet tiles and adhesive are certified for low VOCs.
Our bathroom and kitchen floor has Crossvilleʼs Color Blox EC, a porcelain stone tile known for strength and durability. Porcelain tile is considered a natural flooring material. The tiles have 20% certified recycled material and are also certified for low VOCs.
On the bathroom walls we have used Crossvilleʼs Echo Recycled Glass. The name says it all as the product is made of recycled material. It also can be cleaned using a neutral PH cleaner for a Green Cleaning system.
Lastly, our Meditation room has To Market Cork Flooring, considered a natural flooring material. A truly sustainable floor made from the bark of the cork trees primarily grown in Portugal. Cork is known for its acoustical & sound absorbing qualities, thermal insulation, durability, resistance to mold and mildew, naturally hypo-allergenic and easy to clean. The day to day cleaning again only required a neutral PH cleaner for low VOC cleaning. Cork is considered to be a rapidly renewable resource.
Four out of the 5 Green Flooring Systems that we purchased from Sergenian's Floor Covering are MADE IN THE USA. The only product not USA made is the cork floor which was made in the Netherlands. Most corks are made in Europe since this is where the trees grow.
